Madame Pele
I relish the adventure and challenge of shots like this one. In such close proximity, the heat of the lava was intense. At one point, my tripod became too hot to pick up; I worried that the lens of my camera would crack with the heat. Most of the time the lava was slow moving, but in this particular scene, the lava moved unexpectedly quickly, and I had to get out of the way. I worked most of the night. At one time I lay down on the lava rock with a towel under my head. I gazed at the full moon and dozed off for twenty minutes or so.
