We Are One
The desert of Central Australia has some of the most extraordinary deep blue skies and ghost gums with the purest and smoothest white skin. I had an idea about photographing white ghost gums with a dry red river bed ideally meandering off into the distance. I searched for my vision, looking in areas where it would be likely that I could find such a scene. I had driven on over 600 miles (1000km) of dirt road. As I was driving on this particular day, I came across this wonderful example of a ghost gum, but without the dry river bed. I couldn't help but hop out of the car and take a closer look. What a magnificent tree, and what wonderful white smooth curves and lines. I was struck by the contrast between the glow of the white against the dark blue sky. I lay on my back with my head in the red sand, trying to get as much of the tree in the frame as possible. I squeezed under my camera with it pressing against my face. The one tree looked like two trees or was it that the two looked like one as their arms flowed together like hands waving in the air... "We Are One".
